Gender-Affirming Care

A compassionate guide to supporting a young person through medical transition.

When transgender and nonbinary youth pursue gender-affirming medical care, the adults supporting them play a crucial role in their journey. Gender-Affirming Care: A Guide for Families of Medically Transitioning Youth offers the clarity caregivers need at a moment when reliable information is often drowned out by noise, misconceptions, and politicized rhetoric. Written by advocate, parent, and former surgical nurse Tammy Plunkett, this guide equips families with trustworthy knowledge and encouragement as they navigate one of the most meaningful chapters in a young person’s life.

Drawing from her experience parenting two transgender children and her medical background, Plunkett provides a steady, compassionate voice for caregivers seeking to understand what medical transition involves and why it matters. This guide describes the realities of puberty blockers, gender-affirming hormones, cosmetic and surgical procedures, consent processes, privacy considerations, and the financial and legal landscape surrounding gender-affirming health care.

Each chapter pairs evidence-based explanations with practical insight that speaks directly to the questions families most often ask:

  • What will this mean for my child’s well-being?
  • How will our family prepare?
  • Where can we find supportive providers?
  • What emotions might surface for us along the way?

Equally important, the book recognizes the caregiver’s emotional world. Plunkett creates space for processing fear, grief, confusion, and joy while reinforcing the importance of self-care as families learn to advocate alongside their loved ones. Brief reflective exercises encourage readers to integrate new information at a manageable pace and foster healthier communication.

Gender-Affirming Care is an essential resource for parents, family members, educators, and any adult supporting a transgender or nonbinary young person seeking medical transition.
