Gender diversity is a relatively new subject in society. Much attention has rightly been given to the person transitioning to protect their mental health and well being. That being said, the parents or caregivers of these individuals may be facing their own mental stressors as their child or teen expresses a gender different from the one they were assigned at birth. Parents are navigating a new world of novel terminology while coming to terms with their own potential emotions of fear, guilt, concern, shame, and loss. People mistakenly associate gender with sexuality and think it is just plain wrong to hear of a child come out as transgender—until they learn the difference. In the meantime, parents and their children face the challenge of discrimination.
As the parent of a transgender person, I strongly believe that supporting parents of transgender children, teens, and young adults serves to help them support their kids which leads to a better outcome for the whole family. As a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach, I work with parents individually or together internationally over Zoom.
